How Our Business and Workplace Can Honour God

In my coaching practice, a frequent question arises: How can Christians in business and the workplace actively live out their faith and intentionally invite Jesus into their professional lives? The modern business world offers both challenges and opportunities for this. For the Christian entrepreneur or professional, the goal is authenticity – integrating faith and work so that daily tasks become acts of worship and service. This isn't merely about avoiding unethical practices, but actively pursuing work "unto God," honouring Him by stewarding decisions and actions to reflect Him. Through this, people will encounter God’s Kingdom, giving your work eternal value.
At its core, a Christian approach to business is rooted in a relationship with God. It acknowledges that all we possess and achieve are gifts from Him, and thus, our work should honour Him. This perspective shifts focus from pure profit maximization to value creation for employees, customers, suppliers, and the broader community. It recognizes that business can be a powerful force for good, contributing to human flourishing and reflecting God's character.
I experienced this firsthand. My wife and I started a small business, and soon after, a competitor emerged in our neighbourhood. My initial reaction was fear and resentment. However, in prayer, God spoke to me, encouraging me to pray for this other business. He reminded me that He is not limited; He would sustain us and provide clients. This released me from seeking my competitor's downfall, allowing me to trust God to bless both our businesses.
Practical Tips for Living Out Christian Values
How do we apply this practically in day-to-day operations? Here are three tips:
1. Keep Your Higher Purpose in Mind
From a Christian perspective, we are created to worship and glorify God. This higher purpose encompasses all our actions, intentions, and decisions in work and business. For many, this is a new idea, requiring us to reframe our view of the workplace. It's not just a means to earn a living, but a platform to glorify God while remaining profitable. Ask yourself, "How do I view my work or business?" Invite Jesus in prayer to speak into your perspective.
2. Prioritize Godly Decision-Making
As my mom says, "just two degrees off-centre" can lead us completely off-course. I emphasize Godly decision-making because modern ethical standards don't always align with God’s standards of justice and fairness. We need to cultivate a lifestyle of surrender, making decisions based on God’s Word, not popular opinion. Remember, God is with us despite perceived persecution. Ask yourself, "Can I stand before God with a clear conscience that my decisions today were by His leading?" This isn't about condemnation but about increasing awareness and inviting Jesus into every choice.
3. Be Intentional About Generosity and Community Impact
A Christian business understands its purpose extends beyond its walls. Look for opportunities to give back to the community, whether by tithing profits, sponsoring local initiatives, or supporting missionary endeavours. Consider how your business's unique skills and resources can address societal needs or even open your space for groups to discuss God's Word. This intentional generosity not only blesses others but reinforces your business's true purpose: to be a blessing to the world.
Conclusion
Living out Christian values in business and the workplace isn't a formula for guaranteed profit. In fact, it might lead to losing deals or even your job. But what is better: compromising your relationship with Jesus for money, or honouring God, knowing He will sustain you, and pick you up if the worst happens? His goal is to demonstrate His Kingdom through you and bring people into a living relationship with Him through your work.
