In this blog post, we are starting a new series on goals. We will explore the ins and outs of goals and what makes them important, effective, and powerful. We will also look at the intentional ways to make your goals practical, so you make real progress with your goals.
To start our series, we will look at the importance of goals and why so many people shy away from setting goals. I was sitting across from one of my leaders at the time who had a particular dislike for setting goals. He told me that he does not set goals because he is just not wired that way and is more of a go-with-the-flow type of person. Feeling frustrated by his answer I walked away from that meeting no closer to where we as an organisation were heading and what to focus on as we move forward. While some people are more naturally inclined to formulate their goals more easily than others, we all have dreams and desires that are the basis for goals. The point is that goals are within all of us and that all of us can use a little help to clarify, frame and track our goals.
We hear a lot about being more intentional with our lives and making the most of the time we have. The reality is that if we don’t have goals, our lives will happen around us steering and bumping us from this to that until we reach critical milestones in life and wonder what happened to the time. Please don’t misunderstand me, I am not talking about having a five-year plan, or the year ahead mapped out, if that helps you go for it. What I am referring to is intentionally focusing on growth in all areas of life to make the most of what God has given you.

What makes having goals important:
Clarity:
One of the best things about goals is that they give clarity to desires and dreams. When we take the time to think deeply about what growth in our health, relationships, careers etc. look like we start to give voice to that longing in our hearts that is yearning to be explored.
Purpose:
Another quality of goals is the purpose they give to what we give our energy and time to. Our energy and time are some of the most valuable commodities we have in life. When we have goals in the important aspects of life, as mentioned above, we spend our energy and time with purpose and direction.
Adds value to others:
All of us need to add value to the world around us. Having clearly defined goals will help us focus our efforts to make the most of where we add value in life.
Align our actions with our values:
It is always interesting to me to notice how many of us live misaligned with the values we have. People will say that God is the most important person in their lives, yet they spend most of their time on social media. People would say that family is important, yet they spend all their time working on their careers. This happens because we tend to create blind spots in the areas of life that we do not focus on. Having goals in all the different areas of our lives helps us to unmask our blind spots and intentionally align our actions with our values.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will unpack goals and help you become more intentional with the different areas of your life.
