New year’s resolutions made practical.

In this blog post you will:

  • Receive fresh insight into New Year's Resolutions.

  • How to make New Year's Resolutions more practical and attainable.

New Year’s Eve has arrived, and everyone is excited and hopeful about the new year waiting. As soon as the clock strikes midnight people jubilantly congratulate each other and wish each other a happy new year. In this state of excitement many people make resolutions of things that they would like to change in the new year. Some people exclaim that they will exercise more, others will eat healthier and on and on the list goes. These resolutions, however, only last for a week or two until they disappear into thin air only to reappear next New Year’s Eve.

In this blog post series, we will look at overcoming the vague new year’s resolutions that fade away by giving practical tips to create goals out of your new year’s resolutions that are trackable and achievable.

I do not think that there is anything wrong with new year’s resolutions other than that they are too vague and not based on your current reality. When we make resolutions based on a desired future self, we tend to be vague, verbalizing an imagined self that we desire. The problem with this is that if you book a holiday without knowing where that holiday destination is or considering where you currently are you will never reach your destination. The same counts for resolutions, if you are not specific about your end results and break it down into goals to be achieved throughout the year you will not stick to your resolutions. Think of the very common resolution of exercising more this year, and then thinking that if you take out a gym contract and buy gym clothes, you will magically turn into someone that is disciplined to stick to your exercise routine.

When we become specific about our desired outcome it’s easier to create goals that will help you reach your desired outcome.

The first step is to establish your current reality by asking yourself the hard questions before you attempt your resolution. The first question you need to ask is,

“What has prevented me from being or doing this up to now?”

This question allows us to take stock of the habits and practices that we have included into our lives that have kept us from fulfilling our resolutions. The next question we should ask is,

“What do I get when I achieve my resolution?”

Try and repeat this question until you reach your core motivator. A tip is, if your core motivator is not based in, “am I loved” and “how can I add value to others,” then you might want to rethink your resolution. The third question is,

“What will it take to realise this resolution?”

This question uncovers the steps and work needed to fulfil your resolution. A tip is not to get stuck at the foot of the mountain, but rather to determine what the steps are to reach the top of the mountain.

Order your new year’s resolutions into a top three list. Next take number one and apply the following steps to it.

·        Visualise the specifics of your resolution by making it as specific as possible.

·        Establish your current reality by asking these three questions:

o   What has prevented me from being or doing this up to now? (Uncover habits)

o   What do I get by fulfilling my resolution? (Core motivator)

o   What will it take to realise this resolution? (Steps to reach your resolution)
